The author points out in the introduction:

"The intention of this book is to explore the richness and variety of graphic imagery that has developed outside the influence of the 'European tradition', focusing on the work of graphic designers and artists in four geographical zones: Africa, the Far East, Latin America and the Middle East.

The visual traditions in these regions have been shaped by many factors, including religion, mythology and politics, as well as by the tools and materials locally available, and these influences have resulted in some particularly distinctive approaches to visual communication. These are reflected in posters, magazines, comics, record covers, packaging and various forms of promotion, and are also apparent in a range of vernacular graphic expression that includes graffiti, street murals, transport decoration, signs, political symbols, and textiles and fashion imagery.

Geoffrey Caban is Professor of Design Studies at the University of Technology, Sydney. He is the author of a number of books and journal papers on design history and design education.
